Indeed, we've been able to do this for several years, but it takes a fair amount of careful time on the part of the human involved, and the end result still looks unnatural to me. The thing about the quality of blur ("bokeh", as it's known) in a shot like my example is that there is a smooth transition from in-focus to out of focus, and even within the very blurred background areas there is variation that directly corresponds to distance.

If you wanted to create single shot photos like the first one shown - I don't know if this qualifies as inexpensive, but you could use one of the Canon Rebel series and the EF 50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro. Let me know if you're interested and would like more details or free advice (worth every penny).Jess Isaiah Levinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07037913907655451813noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6471682564764584057.post-47178438014598447722014-07-10T10:41:39.737-04:002014-07-10T10:41:39.737-04:00Is there a camera out there that is both inexpensi...Is there a camera out there that is both inexpensive and easy to use that would create such an illusion in a single shot?Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15101500916547854762noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6471682564764584057.post-65204529533179790882014-07-10T09:15:36.506-04:002014-07-10T09:15:36.506-04:00I love it when I learn stuff before 10am. :-) No...I love it when I learn stuff before 10am. :-) Not for the first time, I say, "Wow, Jess!"Barbhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15591916683842089588noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6471682564764584057.post-50144481380149256572014-07-10T09:12:30.604-04:002014-07-10T09:12:30.604-04:00Color contrast and contrast of sharp against soft ...Color contrast and contrast of sharp against soft can strengthen that illusion. :-)Jess Isaiah Levinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07037913907655451813noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6471682564764584057.post-40537040824050365432014-07-10T07:11:45.002-04:002014-07-10T07:11:45.002-04:00This looks 3-D!This looks 3-D!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
